Can anyone tell me how to plant corn?
I’m going to start planting corn and tomatoes. I already know how to grow tomatoes but I know nothing about corn. I just want a small patch in my backyard, but I need help! If you know anything about it, just walk me through the steps.
Corn needs full sun, and it does like heat. Choose the location wisely. Then choose a variety appropriate for your area. If you live in a cooler climate, you don’t want a long-season variety.
The most important thing to keep in mind when you plant corn is that you cannot plant it in one row. Corn is pollinated by the wind – the pollen from the tassels needs to reach the silk in each ear to produce nice full ears. Have you ever seen ears of corn that have just a few kernels on them? That is poorly pollinated corn. So plant your corn in blocks of at least 4 rows to ensure good pollination.
You’re also going to experience corn earworms and their damage. They like to tunnel into the tips of the ears and gnaw on the kernels. I’ll assume you’d like to grow this corn organically. To prevent earworm damage, buy or make some garlic water, and as the silk appears on the ears, spray garlic water onto the silk. This will repel the earworms, but it won’t affect how the corn tastes.
Now you’re going to want to know how to make garlic water, aren’t you! It’s easy. Place a couple of heads of garlic in a quart jar and fill that jar with boiling water. Seal the jar and let it sit on the counter over night. The next day, strain off the water and keep it in a jar. You can also freeze it, perhaps in ice cube trays, for later use. Add a drop or two of dish soap before you spray it to help it stick to the plants. Garlic water will repel all sorts of insect pests, but the flavor dissipates quickly so it won’t affect the taste of your veggies.
