Most everyone at some point has grown plants in containers. Plants are such a vital part of every person’s life, it is no wonder that growing container herbs has become as popular as it has. The larger portion of these container herbs are grown indoors.
You probably have friends who live in tiny, one bedroom apartments, maybe even in a high rise building with no exterior space at all. You may even live in an apartment like that. Of the people you know in a similar situation, how many have some type of potted plant? Your answer is probably, “Most all of them.”
Whether you have lived the life of a farmer or never been in the country, there is a good possibility you might attempt to grow something at some time in your life. Container gardening is both constructive and rewarding. It takes very little of your time, and it’s very interesting.
Growing plants indoors is necessary if you do live in an apartment building, but even if you live in a house with a large yard, it still has many advantages. One of the advantages is the controlled temperature. Plants love a conditioned space with proper lighting and adequate water. Given these three items, your herbs will thrive. You can’t get that type of control outdoors.
Those gnawing insects love outdoor plants. They never seem to eat weeds, just the things you plant for harvesting. If your plants are planted and grown inside, you will eliminate most of these parasites. You still have to check your plants occasionally to be sure undesirable insects haven’t found their way inside.
Some insects, as well as animals, attack your exterior crops from beneath the ground. One particular such animal is the mole. They won’t bother your herbs inside the house.
There is no concern of wind and rain beating your plants to death if they are inside, and they will never get too much sun.
Indoor plants usually get more attention than the ones outdoors, especially if they are located in a space that you see on a regular basis. Locate them on window ledges and tables in rooms with sufficient light, or anywhere that causes you to notice them.
Of all the reasons to raise your herbs inside, none is better than the convenience of harvesting when you want. If you are cooking and need fresh basil, snip off just what you need. The same is true with salads, because almost all herbs add something to the flavor of a green salad.
Growing container herbs may not be for everyone, but it is an easy, inexpensive, and fun way to garden. If you ever want to have fresh herbs at your convenience, give it a try. The time you spend with the plants is negligible, but the benefits are vast.
