I need advice about retaining wall types.?
In my garden there is a large bank about 3m high by 7 metres long. It is currently retained by a two tier dry stone wall, which has started to fall away.
As it is right outside our living room we need something that doesnt look too harsh and not too expensive.(one large wall would look a bit much).
We have had a couple of quotes for 6000 pounds to do a two tier block retaining wall (lay on the flat).
We have decided to tackle it ourselves (god help us), but are still looking at the best option. Someone has suggested using posts and sleepers, but im not sure if this will be strong enougth.
Note the bank is not retaining any structural features, only a lawn on the top.
Any advice would be appreciated. I have photos but not sure how anyone can view them, maybe i could email them.
One way to approach this is to increase the effective stress of the soil…which means keep it as dry as possible. A wet soil is weak and will fail in shear. If you could completely eliminate the moisture from the embankment, it could possibly stand without any retaining wall. But typically, the idea is to try to approach the problem from 2 angles…keeping soil moisture as low as possible (usually a function of the site), and then reinforcing the embankment for times when the soil is very wet and weak. And you can also picture where the moisture problems will most likely be in the embankment, ie near the bottom.
If you can somehow intercept ground water from the embankment with french drains, and reshape the top of the embankment to keep water from running down its face, then will have solved the majority of the problem without even building a wall. If you can only accomplish this partially, then you’ll have to re-build the wall. Make sure there is adequate drainage behind the wall…ie, good, clean gravel or sand that will not hold water but convey it rapidly to a french drain at the base of the wall and then to an outlet.
Also, you will have to provide a connection between the wall and the embankment…deadmen or soil anchors or soil nails. Also, use the larger rocks at the bottom (the foundation so to speak) because this is where the earth pressure is the highest…and anchor them securely down into the soil so they don’t “slide”…ie bury them at least 1 foot into the ground…more is better, and bigger is better.
